Acids and Alkalis

Titration

A titration is used to make soluble salts or to calculate concentration.

How much acid is needed to neutralise an alkali?

In a titration an acid can be added drop by drop to an alkaline solution.
The
pH of the alkaline solution will decrease as more acid is added.
When the
pH goes down to 7, the solution will be neutral.
If
more acid is added,
the
pH will continue to go down and the solution becomes acidic.

The point where the solution becomes neutral
(called the
end point) can be found using 3 methods.

1)  Use an indicator or a pH meter.
2)  Measure the
conductivity of the solution.
3)  Measure the
amount of heat released into the solution.
